When science and skin care teamed up it created a new breed of advanced formulas for treating pigmentation, wrinkles and other skin conditions. They are sometimes to referred to as cosmeceuticals although there is endless debate around this particular word. It is a word we find quite fitting as it links the crossover between cosmetics and pharmaceuticals, elevating an ordinary over-the-counter product to one that is physician dispensed. There is no other word quite like it.
Used correctly these products have the potential to make a real and noticeable difference to the skin because of the active ingredients backed by clinical evidence. Not only have they undergone rigorous research and development but many of them have been developed by Dermatologists who have a good understanding of the skin.
Once the research and development of a new product is complete, the efficacy still needs to be tested to substantiate claims that it is clinically-proven or scientifically-based. These studies are called randomized double-blinded studies, which means that some people on the clinical trial would use a product with an active ingredient whereas other people in the same study would use a plain cream without an active ingredient.
